The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has re-elected Joseph Mathunjwa as president of the organisation for another five-year term, alongside a new national executive committee.

During AMCU’s 2025 national congress, trade union officials adopted seven strategic resolutions with the aim of strengthening worker mandates, organisational renewal and economic justice.

Delegates gathered from across South Africa to assess AMCU’s progress, confront shortcomings and adopt a clear programme of action rooted in worker control and independence, the union states.

Other key positions in the organisation include Phuthuma Manyathi as deputy president, Abiot Lebelwane as treasurer-general, Molotlegi Tlatsoeng as national chairperson for health and safety and Ntshebele Mankge as national chairperson for education.

This leadership collective has been mandated to drive organisational consolidation, worker education and improved health and safety across all sectors in which AMCU is represented.

Commenting on the congress, Mathunjwa says the gathering has strengthened AMCU’s core leadership and reaffirmed that workers want a disciplined, militant and accountable leadership that serves without fear or favour.

Some of the resolutions adopted at the congress include stronger protections against unfair dismissal, labour broking and exploitative forms of work; an intensified fight for a labour-intensive job creation programme capable of absorbing youth and retrenched workers; and a transformed and worker-friendly Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration as well as bargaining structures that are adequately resourced and accessible.

AMCU also resolved to demand a shift towards beneficiation, industrialisation and genuine community upliftment linked to South Africa’s mineral wealth and to champion a worker-centred energy transition that protects jobs and prevents climate policy from becoming a tool for retrenchments.

The union will also continue advocating for safer mine operations, and housing, healthcare, education and community upliftment across all sectors it operates in.

Mathunjwa says the resolutions will form the basis of AMCU’s campaigns over the next term.
