The Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire has announced the fourth quarter of this year as the revised launch date for contactless payments along the Bakwena N1/N4 route.

The new payment methods offer improved security by enabling real-time payments while road users keep possession of their cards during transactions.

Once live, the toll concessionaire will accept contactless-enabled debit or credit cards issued by all South African banks. It will also accept near-field communication-enabled devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches, linked to a virtual card.

Similarly, it will accept payment apps such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Wallet, and all alternative tap-and-pay apps that allow the use of South Africa-issued bank cards will be accepted at the contactless terminals.

If road users do not have a contactless card or device, they will still be able to pay with cash or use a South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) tag.

Currently, Bakwena does not accept debit cards, but, until the launch of contactless payment, it will continue to accept South African credit and fleet cards via magstripe payments, cash and Sanral tags as payment methods at its toll plazas.
