Networking and security technology company Cisco, in collaboration with business incubation hub Forge X, will launch a new Cisco EDGE Centre in Johannesburg to stimulate innovation and support small, medium-sized and microenterprises (SMMEs) to thrive in South Africa’s digital economy.

The centres function as hubs for incubation, innovation and education, and provide access to Cisco connectivity and collaboration technology, as well as resources for training and enablement programmes to local businesses.

“The new centre will be equipped with Cisco technology, enabling local businesses to connect with global Cisco experts,” the company explains.

Additionally, its IT-skills-to-jobs programme Cisco Networking Academy will offer training opportunities on skills development, digital literacy, and cybersecurity certifications.

This will be the eighth Cisco EDGE Centre in South Africa, which are part of Cisco's Country Digital Acceleration programme in the country.

Its country programme also includes WomHub, which is a female-led incubator in South Africa dedicated to promoting gender equality and supporting women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Since the first centre opened in 2019 in South Africa, Cisco EDGE Centres have developed 200 local SMME partnerships and supported the creation of 104 jobs.

“This collaboration reflects our goal of supporting South Africa's digital economy, which is expected to comprise nearly 20% of GDP by 2028.

“Our shared vision with Forge X is to create a new network of certified Cisco partners offering innovative technology solutions to the South African market,” says Cisco South Africa Country Digital Acceleration leader Conrad Steyn.

The collaboration will enable SMMEs to leverage technology to build sustainable businesses and drive local innovation. Forge X's hands-on approach to business development and Cisco’s extensive expertise create a robust support structure for entrepreneurs and youth, says Forge X executive director Martine Solomon.

“We are building an inclusive ecosystem where digital and entrepreneurial skills foster economic resilience and community growth,” she emphasises.

The collaboration reinforces Cisco's commitment to fostering an inclusive digital future by driving innovation and enabling job creation within South Africa’s dynamic technology landscape, Cisco South Africa country leader Smangele Nkosi says.

“With AI emerging as a crucial driver of economic transformation, it is vital to equip SMMEs with the skills, tools and knowledge required to harness its potential. By empowering these businesses, we not only accelerate their growth but also contribute to sustainable income generation and long-term economic resilience in the country,” she explains.
