Citrus season nears final inspection day for fruits destinated for Europe
As the final day for inspection of Valencia oranges destined for Europe nears on September 20, which will conclude the 2025 export season, the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA) and the Fresh Produce Exporters Forum (FPEF) confirm that consumers in Europe have shown exceptional appetite for South African citrus.
“Local citrus growers have packed substantially more product for Europe than ever before,” the industry organisations state.
The final inspection day on September 20 pertains to South African regions where Black Spot is present, and does not include exports from the Western and Northern Cape provinces. The conclusion of the citrus season also does not affect the limited remaining volumes of mandarins.
The closure date gives growers currently still packing fruits one week to finalise their processes.
“As the South African citrus season in Europe comes to its natural end around the middle of October, this gives the floating consignments of approved oranges time to reach destinations in Europe,” the CGA and the FPEF say.
The last inspection day announcement also allows the northern hemisphere to take advantage of current market conditions.
“It is in a spirit of continued and growing cooperation with European citrus producers, especially in Spain, that the South African industry now hands over the handling of citrus demand to the northern hemisphere,” the CGA explains.
