Industrial products supplier Bearings International is expanding its market share in South Africa’s electric motor industry through its continued commitment to providing reliable, energy efficient motor solutions.

“Bearings International continuously engages with its global supplier to ensure that we stay abreast of technological advancements and new offerings,” says motors and drives business unit leader Stephen Bekker.

Through partnerships with renowned manufacturers – ABB and TechTop – the company can offer a comprehensive range of high-quality electric motors and meet the evolving demands of various industries while considering sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Bearings International is a channel partner for low-voltage motors, in addition to stocking and supplying motors from ABB’s factories in Finland and India.

Bekker explains that, in full, motors account for about 45% of the world’s total electricity consumption, adding that the number of such motors installed worldwide “will double by the year 2040”.

ABB, with 130 years of experience, is considered one of the largest motor manufacturers in the world, spanning the International Electrotechnical Commission low- voltage motors, National Electrical Manufacturers Association low-voltage motors, medium-voltage motors and generators.

As such, to minimise the associated carbon footprint, Bekker highlights the importance of moving to more efficient electric motors, such as ABB’s IE3, IE4 and IE5 electric motors.

He explains that these motors offer longer life spans, lower maintenance costs and substantial energy savings, consequently enabling businesses to optimise their operations and achieve significant cost reductions over time.

“It is crucial to consider the total cost of ownership (TCO), rather than solely focusing on the initial purchase price when making motor purchasing decisions,” he warns, adding that, in most applications, the purchase price of the motor accounts for less than 3% of the TCO.

“The largest capital outlay is the running cost of the motor, which can amount to as much as 95% of the cost of ownership, with downtime making up the balance of the percentage (less than 2%). It is, therefore, imperative to choose a reliable and energy efficient motor if businesses want to cut costs.”

Bekker notes that the primary goal is to produce mechanical energy from electrical energy in the most efficient way without failing.

“Regardless of power supply technologies, which are evolving rapidly, electric motors are still the most efficient means to drive industry processes. “The cost of higher efficiency motors will continue to improve and, if the focus remains on a reputable manufacturer like ABB, consumers can feel at ease that the correct technology is being used in their process.”

ABB has a wide range of electric motors, spanning different industries including mining, oil and gas, as well as fast-moving consumer goods; the company is also expanding into the electric vehicle industry.

Bekker further highlights Alpha Motors, a Bearings International brand, is manufactured by TechTop, which is considered one of the largest motor manufacturers in China.

“Through their worldwide network, TechTop manufactures and supplies two-million of the four-million aluminium-frame electric motors exported by China yearly,” Bekker says.

He adds that TechTop is “recognised for its exceptional quality and cost-effectiveness, making it a preferred choice in the market”.

TechTop’s extensive worldwide network enables the company to produce and export a substantial portion of China’s aluminum-frame electric motors, solidifying TechTop’s reputation as a reliable motor brand.

In addition to stock and sales support in South Africa, Bearings International has bolstered its capabilities by investing in a competent technical support team.

The team not only provides after-sales support but also assists customers in selecting the most appropriate motors for their specific applications, Bekker says, adding that, with the company’s extensive stock availability and sales support across the country, customers can rely on prompt and efficient service throughout the procurement process.

“By actively expanding our presence in the electric motor industry through strategic partnerships with ABB and TechTop, Bearings International demonstrates its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of customers and industries across the country.”

He concludes that, with the company’s technical expertise, comprehensive product range and dedication to customer support, “Bearings International is well positioned to deliver reliable and efficient motor solutions, contributing to the success and growth of industries throughout South Africa”.
