The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) has clarified that the closing date for public comments on the draft amended Regulation 4 of the Consumer Protection Act is December 12, not January 15 as it originally stated.

Government gazetted the amended regulations on October 28, giving interested parties 45 days to submit their comments.

The amended regulations provide mechanisms to block unwanted direct marketing communication, since South African consumers have been increasingly exposed to intrusive marketing, the dtic says.

If promulgated, Regulation 4 will allow consumers to register a preemptive block on an opt-out registry, which direct marketers must consult before contacting any consumer for direct marketing.
