FlySafair happy with wage agreement with SACCA ahead of expected G20 travellers
FlySafair expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached with the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA), bringing an end to a labour dispute over the past several weeks and holding out the promise of long-term stability.
The airline and SACCA have been locked in negotiations over wages and working conditions.
Last week, the airline and the SACCA failed to reach an agreement on wage increases and other employment terms, prompting a lockout.
“This agreement allows us to move forward with confidence into an important period for both the company and the broader aviation sector,” said FlySafair chief marketing officer Kirby Gordon.
The settlement sees extended multi-year agreements with both unions representing FlySafair’s pilots and cabin crew, for labour stability among crew for the next four years.
Gordon said the final agreement reached with SACCA is materially similar to the proposal tabled by the company last Friday.
The union had rejected the company’s latest offer, which included a 5.7% salary increase, plus a new 7.5% annual bonus, annual experience-based pay progression and additional monthly allowances.
When combined, these elements translate to an effective increase of between 16% and 19% for employees, who are already earning market-related salaries.
“While the company notes with some regret that earlier acceptance would have spared union members the hardship of a further unpaid week, FlySafair reiterates its full respect for the collective bargaining process and the rights of employees to engage in negotiation through their chosen representatives,” said Gordon.
The airline also extended its appreciation to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration commissioners who it said played a “pivotal role” in facilitating discussions.
“Their professionalism, commitment, and tireless efforts throughout this process were instrumental in helping reach a fair and balanced resolution,” he said.
He noted that throughout the negotiations, FlySafair’s operations remained fully stable, with all flights operating as scheduled.
The airline is now looking to ramp up capacity ahead of the G20 Summit and the festive travel season, said Gordon.
