GreenSun launches first of a kind solar energy-as-a-service offering for households
As South Africa’s regulators mull a proposal from Eskom that could see electricity tariffs rise by as much as 40% next year, renewable-energy company GreenSun Renewable Energy has launched an energy-as-a-service offering for residential customers.
The company is offering smart solar and battery installation at homes, all for the same cost or lower than current electricity bills, with increased reliability.
The solution allows users to avoid escalating municipal rates by buying energy produced by their system at a lower cost than local municipal electricity rates.
GreenSun still owns all of the solar equipment and batteries, with homeowners buying the generated solar power through a smart meter and app-based wallet system.
While each kilowatt-hour will be cheaper than municipal electricity, higher savings will be achieved at the rate that Eskom’s tariffs are increasing, compared with the rates at which GreenSun’s electricity prices will increase.
Since loadshedding started in 2008, electricity prices have increased by 450%, far exceeding the 98% inflation rate growth over the same period.
EnergyEase represents South Africa’s first residential power purchase agreement, transforming the way energy consumption is approached. Homeowners benefit from lower energy rates and increased reliability, while paying only for the energy generated and stored by their system.
GreenSun assures the system is equipped to handle high summer energy demand and ensures comprehensive home connectivity – not just basic lighting and plugpoints.
The smart metering technology with the system allows for remote energy management and monitoring, with daily consumption being reconciled and credited.
The company says EnergyEase is ideal for homeowners with monthly electricity bills of R2 500 or more, who seek to reduce costs and ensure a stable power supply.
