The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has received recall notifications from Volkswagen, Volvo Cars and Toyota in South Africa.

Toyota is recalling 6 662 Hino 500 SKD series trucks and 77 Hino 500 CBU series trucks sold from May 11, 2017 to December 14, 2023, and from May 31, 2018 to December 25, 2024, respectively.

The NCC says an incorrect cage bolt spanner was supplied in the Hino 500 SKD vehicles, while Hino 500 CBU series trucks came without the cage bolt spanner.

VW in South Africa is recalling 159 Golf 8 R2.0 TSI 7-speed DSG 235 KW and Golf 8 GTI 2.0 TSI 7-speed DSG 180 KW models sold between April 16 and June 30 this year.

The NCC says these vehicles are being recalled owing to a defect in the front passenger seat belt.

The possibility exists that the seat belt on the front passenger side is not properly attached to the lower anchoring point owing to a fault in the sewing process.

In the event of an accident, this could result in serious or fatal injuries to the front passenger seat occupant.

Volvo Cars has, in turn, notified the NCC about the recall of 26 XC90 plug-in hybrid vehicles, model year 2025, owing to the vehicle's braking functionality being temporarily disabled under certain conditions.

“The NCC has noted the recent rise of recalls of motor vehicles or related components of such motor vehicles, and is engaging affected suppliers for further information to determine the required steps to address this,” says NCC acting commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu.

“In the meantime, consumers with affected vehicles are urged to urgently book their vehicles with their nearest approved dealerships for a thorough vehicle check, at no cost.”
