United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres has warned of a "real risk" of multiple famines this year. "We face an unprecedented global hunger crisis," Guterres told a meeting in Berlin last month. “The war in Ukraine has compounded problems that have been brewing for years: climate disruption; the Covid-19 pandemic; the deeply unequal recovery." Millions of people in 37 countries, several in Africa, are on the brink of famine, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. Photograph: Reuters
