With many emerging and developing industries in Africa, as well as greater awareness of environmental issues and concerns, instrumentation manufacturer E Instruments regards the continent as an area of growth for its business.

E Instruments product manager Bill Freed tells Engineering News that the company provides portable industrial combustion stack gas and emission analysers that can be used to measure stack gases emitted from furnaces, kilns, dryers, ovens, engines, boilers and other combustion equipment. Therefore, the company aims to increase its supply to Africa.

The analysers can be used to ensure optimal and safe operating conditions of combustion equipment, maximise combustion efficiency and increase fuel savings. They also provide an accurate way of measuring the emissions of pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulphide, and carbon dioxide, for regulatory purposes.

Freed notes that the company sells its analysers globally and in African countries such as South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Zambia, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda and Burkina Faso.

Further, the company is also focusing more on service issues that can be addressed in Africa to be more responsive to clients.

In terms of services, the company provides factory-recommended recalibration for portable industrial combustion stack gas and emissions analysers, as well as videos and the training materials required to operate the analysers.

Freed enthuses that the company’s industrial combustion stack gas and emissions analysers have been successfully used in several industrial applications in these countries, including cement and lime kilns; furnaces, in industries such as glass, mining and steels; dryers, in the food and beverage industries such as tobacco; and heat-treating industries.

Moreover, its analysers can be used for boilers of all sizes, including large industrial power plant boilers, such as that of State-owned power utility Eskom, in South Africa; and gas and diesel industrial engines in markets such as mining, marine, power generation and agriculture.

“As our analysers can be used in many different industries and applications, E Instruments is skilled at helping clients determine the technical configuration and features of our analysers that would best suit each application to allow for optimal performance and accuracy . . .”

Freed details the key features of the company’s analysers as the ability to have up to nine gas sensors per analyser, built-in printers on hand-held units, a sample condition unit to protect against moisture and optimise the accuracy of NOx and SO2 measurements; and sintered filters for applications with heavy amounts of dust and particulates.

E Instruments has been manufacturing portable instrumentation since 2001, which, in addition to industrial combustion stack gas and emissions analysers, also includes indoor air-quality monitors; heating, ventilation and air-conditioning combustion analysers; and vehicle exhaust gas analysers.
