International passengers up 9% at Cape Town airport, local passengers up 6%
The Cape Town International Airport in January handled more than 367 000 two-way passengers at its international terminal, marking a 9% year-on-year increase.
The airport’s domestic terminal processed more than 680 000 two-way passengers in January, which equates to 6% growth compared with the same period last year.
This is according to data released by air-route development project, Cape Town Air Access (CTAA).
Cape Town International Airport in February also welcomed Africa’s first Airbus A350-1000 on an African route, introduced by Ethiopian Airlines.
The airline says it will increase its service to double daily flights between Cape Town and its hub at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport this month, as passenger demand continues to rise.
CTAA on Monday also warned that Middle East airspace closures, owing to the war that erupted this weekend between Iran and the US and Israel, have resulted in flight cancellations at Cape Town International Airport.
Looking at the broader Western Cape, George Airport in January handled just more than 84 000 two-way passengers, which is a 14% jump compared with the same period last year.
According to CTAA, air-cargo trade volumes for the Western Cape reached just more than 8 800 t in November last year, which is a 7% decline compared with the same period in 2024.
Total air-cargo trade volume for the first 11 months of 2025 stand at more than 89 000 t, however, which translates into healthy 35% growth.
The export/import split for the period is 58/42, with exports and imports growing by 32% and 41%, respectively, on a year-to-year basis.
Temperature- and climate-controlled commodities, such as fish, berries, meat and vegetables, dominated the export market, representing 61% of the total exports.
Clothing and textile commodities continue to make up the largest share of air trade imports, accounting for 11% of total imports.
