The City of Johannesburg's Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has formed a strategic partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) to accelerate youth economic participation, enterprise development and inclusive urban growth across Johannesburg.

The partnership aims to expand meaningful pathways for young people to access skills development programmes, opportunities and support within the city’s development space.

“This collaboration will create pathways for youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and innovation in Johannesburg. The partnership aims to unlock opportunities that will shape the future of our economy and communities,” says JDA CEO Themba Mathibe.

The partnership will focus on youth development and employment, including through means of skills development programmes, short-term placement opportunities and participation in the JDA’s construction and infrastructure projects.

Additionally, the organisations will support youth-owned businesses, host entrepreneurship competitions and create funding frameworks as part of the collaboration.

The partners will also provide accessible platforms for youth to receive information, guidance and support, using the JDA's venues and its coordination of the programmes.

Further, in terms of construction and infrastructure, the partnership will provide compliance training and mentorship for young women and persons with disabilities to increase youth participation in the built environment sector.

The final focus area of the partnership is communication, governance, and coordination, which will see information sharing, joint steering committees and aligned implementation of development initiatives between the organisations.

The partnership will run over a three-year period and will be guided by a joint project steering committee and a detailed implementation plan that will be finalised within 60 days, the City of Johannesburg says.
