John Deere introduces eco-conscious 944 X-Tier wheel loader to Africa

POWERFUL FUEL EFFICIENCY The E-Drive system enables the 944 X-Tier to consume 13% to 33% less fuel compared with traditional drive loaders in typical applications
Agricultural, construction and forestry equipment supplier John Deere has unveiled its latest advancement in heavy machinery for the African market: the 944 X-Tier wheel loader, which not only promises enhanced productivity but also underscores a significant commitment to environmental sustainability.
Central to the 944 X-Tier’s innovation is its hybrid-electric drivetrain that integrates a John Deere 13.5 engine with advanced electric drive components, resulting in a machine that delivers power while also optimising fuel efficiency. Notably, the E-Drive system enables the 944 X-Tier to consume 13% to 33% less fuel compared with traditional drive loaders in typical applications, leading to substantial reductions in operational costs and environmental impact.
Equipped with a Tier 4 Final engine, the 944 X-Tier meets stringent Environmental Protection Act emissions standards, achieving an 80% reduction in nitrogen oxides compared with other tiers. These reductions are achieved through advanced technologies such as selective catalytic reduction and diesel particulate filters, resulting in cleaner exhaust emissions and a significant decrease in pollutants that contribute to smog and respiratory issues.
Eco-Friendly Advantages
The 944 X-Tier’s design reflects John Deere’s dedication to environmental responsibility. The E-Drive system not only improves fuel efficiency but also reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 31 kg/hour compared with traditional drive machines. Over 30 000 hours, this equates to about 930 000 kg less CO₂ emitted, underscoring John Deere’s commitment to sustainable solutions, says the company.
Additionally, the hybrid electric drivetrain helps prevent excessive tyre spin, resulting in increased tyre life. This means the 944 X-Tier will require four fewer tyre changes over its lifespan, preventing over 90 000 kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere that would have occurred through the manufacturing and disposal of the extra tyres.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the 944 X-Tier is equipped with exclusive features designed to maximise productivity and reduce operating costs. The traction control system automatically limits torque to any wheel when slippage occurs, eliminating runaway wheel spin and increasing tyre life. Additionally, the coast control feature allows operators to adjust the machine’s deceleration aggressiveness, extending service brake life.
Understanding the importance of durability, the 944 X-Tier is engineered to last multiple lifecycles. Since it does not contain major components such as axles and a transmission, those components will not need to be rebuilt or replaced as they would in a conventional-drive loader. A mid-life event for this loader within the 18 000- to 20 000-hour range costs about 50% to 60% less than rebuilding a traditional-drive machine.
The electric components on the 944 X-Tier electric drive are backed by an eight-year, 20 000-hour warranty, providing peace of mind when investing in this machine. This extensive warranty reflects the trust John Deere has in the 944 X-Tier’s advanced technology and the company’s dedication to providing unparalleled support to customers. It is a testament to the machine’s quality and the company’s commitment to ensuring its long-term performance in demanding environments.
