The KwaZulu-Natal Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) centres have once again delivered outstanding matric results, reaffirming the programme’s commitment to academic excellence and youth empowerment.

For over 35 years, the EMSS programme has provided free supplementary education in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English, equipping talented South African learners with the knowledge and skills to access tertiary education and pursue careers in critical fields.

The four KZN EMSS centres based at – Fairvale, Ganges, Umlazi, and Hillview – gathered for a combined awards ceremony to celebrate the exceptional achievements of the Class of 2024. This special event recognised top-performing learners from each centre who have secured places at leading universities across the country, many pursuing degrees in fields such as Medicine, Engineering, and Law.

Engen hosted the awards ceremony at Fairvale Secondary School on 8 February 2025, honouring these exceptional learners for their hard work and dedication.

Spotlight on Top Achievers

Umlazi EMSS Centre

Slindokuhle Mngxati achieved an outstanding 98% in Mathematics and 97% in Physical Science, securing a place in the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

“The EMSS programme improved my knowledge of Physical Science, Mathematics, and English. I was fortunate to place third in Physical Science and second in Mathematics in the Umlazi District, competing against learners from all high schools in the area,” she shares.

Her journey was built on sheer hard work. “My school day started at 06:30 and ended at 18:00. I studied throughout, only pausing for the school meal. I attended school Monday to Sunday, and even holidays felt like regular school days. The support from my teachers, friends, and family kept me motivated,” she reflects.

Her advice to the Class of 2025 is: “Remain focused and committed. Strive for excellence, persevere through challenges, and stay dedicated to your goals.”

Another top achiever, Mbali Nothile, earned seven distinctions, including 95% in both Mathematics and Physical Science.  A former Zwelibanzi High School learner, she attributes her success to attending the EMSS classes every Saturday.  She is now pursuing an MBChB at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Mbuso Percy Ndwalane, also from Zwelibanzi High School, achieved seven distinctions, including 93% in Mathematics, 83% in Physical Science, and 84% in English. He is set to study Medicine this year.   “It’s okay to make mistakes – they’re opportunities for growth. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance will pay off,” he advises future matrics.

Fairvale EMSS Centre

Caden Matthew Sylvester, 18, achieved six distinctions, including 80% in English, 83% in Mathematics, and 80% in Physical Science. From Wentworth, Durban, he is pursuing an LLB at the University of Pretoria. “EMSS exposed me to effective teaching methods and helped me approach complex questions with confidence,” he says.

Caleb William Bransby, 17, a Fairvale High School Centre alumnus, secured four distinctions, including 81% in English and 85% in Mathematics. He is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at Durban University of Technology (DUT).

William Ronnie, 18, a Durban High School graduate, earned five distinctions, including 87% in English and 82% in Physical Science. He is studying Medicine at Wits University this year. “EMSS was pivotal to my success,” he says. “I genuinely believe I wouldn’t have achieved these marks without it.”

Ganges EMSS Centre

Mikayla Naidoo, a Durban Girls’ High School graduate, achieved seven distinctions, including 95% in Mathematics, 88% in Physical Science, and 92% in English. Now studying a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at UCT, she credits EMSS for refining her exam techniques. “In matric, time is of the essence. Remain consistent from day one to avoid last-minute cramming,” she advises.

Siphesihle Prosperity Buthelezi, from Mowat Park High, earned an incredible eight distinctions, including 92% in English, 95% in Mathematics, and 88% in Physical Science. She is set to study Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) at UCT this year. “The support from my family and friends kept me going. My hard work ensured I made it through,” she says.

Hillview EMSS Centre

Anamika Samir, 18, from Chatsworth, earned seven distinctions and is studying Pharmacy at UKZN, bringing her closer to her dream of becoming a doctor.  “EMSS provided thorough exam preparation, extra notes, and resources that built a strong foundation,” she says. Her advice to future matrics: “Prioritise your time, set realistic goals, and enjoy the journey.”

Smangaliso Ngcobo, 17, from KwaMashu, graduated from Hillview Secondary with six distinctions, including 89% in Mathematics and 82% in Physical Science. He is studying Medicine at UCT. “The most difficult part of matric was giving up my social life. Some nights, I’d attend EMSS classes, sleep for just an hour, then get back to work,” he recalls. His motivation was his favourite Bible verse, Romans 8:18: “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that’s coming.”

Empowering South Africa’s Future

For over 35 years, EMSS has provided free supplementary education at 10 centres nationwide, equipping young South Africans with the skills to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“Engen is immensely proud of our KZN matriculants, especially our top achievers who have shown resilience and commitment to academic excellence,” says Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager. “Their success highlights the transformative impact of quality education in shaping lives and driving South Africa’s skills development agenda.”

As part of Engen’s commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes quality education for all, the company remains dedicated to bridging educational gaps and fostering opportunities for learners from underserved communities.

Recognising Excellence Across South Africa

Engen will continue to celebrate EMSS learners’ achievements nationwide through a series of awards ceremonies at its 10 learning centres.

“We are incredibly proud of these learners,” concludes Mdabula. “Their perseverance and achievements inspire future generations and demonstrate the power of education.”
