Partnership to drive growth, sustainability in Northern Cape

Zinc producer Black Mountain Mining has announced a strategic partnership with mining contractor Group T Mining’s subsidiary TNC Mining Swartberg, which is expected to be an important step towards securing long-term operational sustainability, local employment and economic growth in the Northern Cape.

Black Mountain Mining is jointly owned by natural resources company Vedanta (69.6%), mining and renewable energy company Exxaro Resources (24.4%) and an employee share ownership plan (6%).

The partnership, which aims to progress its Swartberg mine at the Black Mountain Mine (BMM) complex, supports BMM’s goal of “Transforming for Good” by promoting responsible mining, creating jobs and generating shared value for employees, communities and stakeholders in the Northern Cape. This collaboration enables BMM and TNC Mining Swartberg to combine their expertise, technology and operational experience to extend the Swartberg mine’s lifespan and enhance the local mining value chain. Additionally, TNC Mining Swartberg has partnered with Steinweld Engineering, its current local partner, to ensure ongoing growth for local businesses, suppliers and residents.

“This marks an exciting new chapter for Vedanta as we aim to secure the future of BMM through this partnership with TNC Mining. It is Vedanta’s philosophy to always find lasting solutions and opportunities through a growth mindset. This development supports our vision to grow the Black Mountain complex into the largest integrated zinc complex,” says Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) CEO Vijay Kumar.

“We are proud to partner with BMM in a collaboration that not only strengthens operational capacity but also empowers people. Our focus is on creating real opportunities for local employment, supporting small businesses and investing in skills that uplift the Northern Cape for generations to come,” says Group T Mining CEO Hannes van Staden.

Both organisations are in the process of onboarding and integration, focusing on employees from BMM’s Deeps and Swartberg operations for opportunities within the new structure. Engagement sessions will be held on-site and in nearby communities to ensure transparent communication with employees, labour unions and local stakeholders.

The Swartberg expansion project is a vital part of VZI’s growth strategy to reach one-million tonnes a year, securing the future of zinc mining in the Northern Cape, sustaining employment and regional socioeconomic development, while transforming for the better.
