As Tete Dijana surged down Masabalala Yengwa Avenue to claim his third Comrades Marathon title on Sunday, some are crediting it to more than just his incredible stamina. With just 9km to go, Dijana gratefully accepted a bottle of Engen’s “supercharged” private label water at the Blue Mile Fan Stop – and the rest, as they say, is race-day history.

The final stretch of the legendary 89.98km Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban witnessed Dijana out-duel defending champion Piet Wiersma, adding 2025 to his previous victories in 2022 and 2023. After a tough first half where early pacemakers burned out, the true race began. At 8.5km from the finish line, Dijana led by 44 seconds – and held on to power to a glorious win, cheered on by thousands lining the Engen Blue Mile.

Fuelled by fans: Engen’s Blue Mile Fan Stop brings Comrades energy to life

The Engen Blue Mile Fan Stop @ Engen 45th Convenience Centre was the heartbeat of race day. Situated just 9km from the finish line, the fan zone exploded with excitement as runners streamed past.

Highlights included:

R75 000 in prizes, including the ultimate race-day reward:

R40 000 in instant prizes for Quickshop shoppers on race day.

FREE fuel for a year – won by Natalie Isaac from Glenwood.

“I still can’t believe it – a whole year of free fuel!” said Natalie Isaac.  “We came out to cheer the runners, and Engen made the day unforgettable. The vibe, the music, the energy – and then to actually win? Thank you, Engen!”

Support all along the way

From the Engen CB Downs Convenience Centre at the start line to the Engen Blue Mile Fan Stop near the finish, Engen powered the journey of 22 000 runners with Fan Stops that provided music, refreshments, safe viewing spots, and spirited encouragement.

As part of Engen’s commitment to community and endurance, these forecourts were transformed into celebration hubs – providing not just fuel, but heart, to athletes and fans alike.

A celebration of courage, endurance and community

“The Comrades Marathon is more than a race – it’s a national moment of pride and unity,” said Engen spokesperson, Gavin Smith. “Whether it's a runner chasing a personal best or a supporter cheering from the sidelines, Engen is proud to help power their journey.”

As South Africa’s leading fuel brand, Engen will continue to stand with everyday heroes – on race day and every day.
