Cement manufacturer PPC has partnered with renewable energy project developer Sturdee Energy for the construction and management of two 10 MW solar plants to provide supplemental power for PPC’s Slurry and Dwaalboom facilities in the North West province.

The partnership signals a move towards decreasing PPC's reliance on traditional energy sources.

Under the terms of the agreement, PPC will not be laying out any capital expenditure on the solar power plants but will pay Sturdee Energy per kilowatt-hour produced by the solar plants and used by the company.

"The power purchase agreement with Sturdee Energy is a significant milestone in PPC’s business transformation journey. By utilising solar energy, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also progressing our efforts to rebuild a profitable and sustainable PPC. This partnership reflects PPC's commitment to responsible manufacturing," PPC COO Ernesto Acosta said on August 12.

PCC confirmed to Engineering News that the solar plants are expected to be operational by October 25.
