To detect early signs of component wear or failure in pumps and other mechanical assemblies, vibration sensors and monitoring systems company Monitran, represented locally by manufacturer Instrotech, has designed a portable, rechargeable instrument for measuring vibration levels.

The MTN/VM220 is a compact, handheld meter, which is designed to operate with a constant current accelerometer, to provide accurate vibration measurements. The instrument conforms to ISO 108463, which involves the evaluation of machine vibration by measurements on nonrotating parts.

The MTN/VM220 is 130 mm × 78 mm × 28 mm, with an easy grip, rubberised case and a long-life lithium-ion rechargeable battery. It also has the ability to store up to 100 time-stamped readings, including root-mean-square, peak, crest factor and bearing conditions, on a colour display screen. Its adaptive amplifier and audio cable output allow for high accuracy, as well as the ability to listen directly to vibration.

Monitran’s emphasis on monitoring systems capitalises on the fact that sensors alone cannot provide the complete answer to measuring vibration or capturing data to determine and understand machine health. Systems can be used not only to measure vibration, but also to display values, constantly monitor levels and take immediate action, in the case of excessive and dangerous vibrations.

The company’s monitoring systems range from simple, portable vibration meters, ideal for spot measurements around the plant, to the latest microprocessor-controlled systems with colour display and programmability, equipping the system with the ability to handle any vibration problem, both in machinery and nonmachinery applications. Also available are single and multichannel vibration switches and monitors.
