Name of the Project
Project DRAGON.

Location
Port Talbot, in Wales, in the UK.

Project Owner/s
LanzaTech UK.

Project Description
The Decarbonising and Reimagining Aviation for the Goal of Netzero, or DRAGON, project will be Wales’ first carbon recycling facilities. It aims to convert locally derived waste gases to ethanol.

The facility is expected to convert sustainable ethanol, through the LanzaJet alcohol-to-jet process, into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% when compared with conventional fossil jet fuel.

To produce the ethanol for the plant, a second facility – using a naturally occurring organism that transforms greenhouse gases to ethanol as part of its natural life cycle – is planned.

The facility is expected to produce 102-million litres a year of ATJ synthetic paraffinic kerosene (to be blended with kerosene to make SAF).

The project will meet the UK government’s mandate that at least 10% of jet fuel should be made from sustainable feedstock by 2030.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
LanzaTech has received £25-million of support from the UK Department for Transport’s Advanced Fuels Fund.
