Rolls-Royce Power Systems has announced that it has opened a new regional headquarters and training centre in Johannesburg. The new facility will support the growing numbers of the group’s mtu-brand stationary and mobile power systems across Africa. These serve the energy, oil and gas, mining, transport and technology sectors, among others. The new facility falls under regional subsidiary Rolls-Royce Solutions Africa and complements the group’s already existing South African facilities.

“As we approach our 25th year in South Africa, this new facility is a clear signal of our confidence in Africa’s growth and our commitment to being closer to our customers,” affirms Director Global Mining and MD, Rolls-Royce Solutions Africa Cobus Van Schalkwyk. “By bringing support services, technical training, and parts availability together under one roof, we’re building the capabilities that matter most to our partners across the continent. This investment also supports our strategy to further localise operations, reduce lead times, and strengthen supply chain resilience — critical advantages for customers operating in remote or fast-paced environments.”

The new facility has an area of some 6 000 m² and creates a central hub for customer-facing operations. These include service coordination, logistics, spare parts storage, and technical training.

Regarding this last function, the centre will be able to train between 100 and 150 people a year, using a broad range of training engines, employed in the mining, power generation and railway sectors. These include mtu 2000-series and mtu 4000-series engines. The training centre is equipped with advanced tools and simulators (for electronic training). It will provide both theoretical and practical training and provide the company’s partners and clients from across the continent with the expertise and practical experience they require to support Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ products across a broad spectrum of industries and applications.

The new facility also has a section dedicated to the engineering and assembly of repower modules. This will allow the customers to replace the engines in their excavators and mining haul trucks with mtu power systems, giving them upgrade options customised to their requirements.

“Fitting mtu engines delivers clear commercial benefits, including lower total cost of ownership through improved fuel efficiency, increased equipment availability, and reduced maintenance costs,” says Rolls-Royce Solutions Africa. “With a strong focus on system resilience, [we are] committed to delivering robust, fit-for-purpose solutions designed to perform in the demanding and often harsh operating environments across the continent.”
