Financial services company Sanlam has installed water storage tanks at Rebongwe Primary School in Meadowlands East, Soweto, as part of its Kas’lam community programme.

The programme directly addresses the critical challenge of unreliable water supply, which disrupts learning and various school activities in many township schools.

The installation is the initial phase of a larger strategy to ensure more township schools across Gauteng have access to dependable water supplies.

“Water shortages have long disrupted learning and teaching at Rebongwe Primary. With the new water tanks, the school can now maintain consistent operations with minimal interruptions to the academic curriculum, even during times of water scarcity,” says Sanlam Retail Mass marketing and client experience executive Feroza Joosub.

“Water security is educational security. When water shortages force schools to close, dreams are put on hold. Through Kas’lam, we are not just installing water tanks; we are creating ongoing educational opportunities.”

“These tanks are a game-changer. They ensure our learners can continue their education without interruption,” adds Rebongwe Primary School principal Tshepo Mngomezulu.

Sanlam points out that the benefits extend beyond the classroom, with a school food vendor noting how the tanks improve their operations, as reliable water access enables the consistent provision of meals for learners who rely on the nutrition programme.

This expansion will help thousands more learners access reliable water supplies, ensuring uninterrupted education, and by securing basic infrastructure, communities are enabled to focus on growth and advancement.

As one of Sanlam’s flagship community development initiatives, Kas’lam focuses on sustainable solutions for township communities.
