Sanral continues to roll out R4bn in upgrades to the N1
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says it is continuing its rollout of almost R4-billion in upgrades to the N1 freeway from Scottland to Winburg, and Zandkraal to Scottland, in the Free State.
Sanral Free State provincial head Marlize Nel-Verwey says the upgrade project, which started in January this year, is expected to be completed in July 2028.
“Key works include the addition of two lanes in the northerly direction to create a four-lane dual carriageway,” notes Sanral Free State province project manager Sumith Kasserchun.
“As a result, several river bridges, as well as major culverts will be lengthened to accommodate the upgrade.”
Kasserchun says small and medium businesses will play an active role in subcontractor works packages, such as the erection and repair of fencing at borrow pits, routine maintenance for collection of litter and debris, cleaning of culverts and concrete drains, and grading of temporary gravel deviations, among others.
“Now that we are in the process of opening a new provincial office here in Bloemfontein for the Free State province, this will allow us to better enhance our stakeholder engagement endeavours with the province,” adds Nel-Verwey.
“We have also increased the numbers of roads that have been transferred to us from the province in recent months.
“The opening of our new office will make it easier for us to get closer to our road network in the Free State.”
More than 1 200 km of the province’s roads have been handed over to Sanral by the Free State provincial government.
