Engen celebrated a key milestone in its Global Citizen Development Programme (EGCDP) as learners in Steelpoort, Limpopo presented the innovative ICT projects they developed during the first phase of their 12-month training journey.

The Project Presentation Day, held on 11 September at Clifford’s Rufaro Hotel, Burgersfort, gave learners the opportunity to demonstrate their growing capabilities in Technical Support. The event marked the completion of the classroom-based component of the programme, after which learners will advance into workplace learnerships across host companies.

Thando Husha, Clients Relationships Manager from Dlama SS Investment Holdings added: “It’s inspiring to see these learners apply their skills so creatively and confidently. Our role is to support their growth and ensure they have the tools and guidance to succeed in the ICT industry. Today’s presentations are a testament to their dedication and potential.”

Launched in Durban in 2023 and expanded to Steelpoort this year, the EGCDP combines theory and workplace training, offering nationally recognised ICT qualifications. Structured as 30% classroom learning and 70% practical experience, the programme equips youth with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in a fast-changing digital economy.

“The digital economy is evolving rapidly, and equipping young people with future-fit skills is essential,” added Dee Mdeka, Engen Skills Development Manager.

Learners also shared their experiences:

  • Diana Khoza: “When I started, I didn’t have a clue about the tech world. But now, I can open up a computer case and confidently identify every component. One of my biggest lessons was learning patience — I struggled with setting up an internet cable at first, but I kept trying until I got it right. This programme has given me confidence.”
  • Dennis Mashelo: “I’ve learnt how to disassemble and reassemble a computer tower, which was very valuable for me because I now understand the components physically, not just from reading about them in books. Being able to work on something with my hands, test it, and see it function gives me confidence.”
  • Kholofelo Komane: “This programme is setting me up for a bright future in the ICT field. It has provided me with a strong foundation and practical skills, and it has sparked a passion to pursue further certifications like CompTIA. I used to think the ICT world was too complicated, especially for women, but this experience has shown me that I belong here and can succeed.”
  • Motlatso Makofane: “Our project involved building Ethernet cables from scratch, setting up the network, and configuring it for internet connectivity. The most challenging part was configuring the switch, which required coding, but we managed to find solutions. It’s been exciting to work on something so practical.”

“Investing in skills development is key to economic upliftment,” said Olwethu Mdabula, Engen CSI Manager. “The progress of these learners is incredibly encouraging, and we look forward to seeing them thrive in the ICT space.”

Engen congratulates the 2025 Steelpoort learners on reaching this milestone and wishes them success as they move into the workplace phase of their journey.
