Sun International’s Sun City Resort, in the North West, has relaunched its Sun City Hotel, reviving its former glory and “reimagining” the iconic original hotel. Natasha Odendaal has the story.

The Sun City Hotel was where it all began, with the Sun City ‘casino’ hotel the resort’s only hotel before the later additions of The Palace of The Lost City hotel, the Cascades hotel and the Cabanas.

The Sun City Hotel was unveiled in 1979, and despite undergoing several refurbishments over its 46-year lifetime, the hotel has been showing her age.

Last year, Sun International embarked on a complete R390-million facelift to bring it into a modern era.

Sun City Hotel’s extensive refurbishment will result in the upgrade of all 350 rooms, bedroom corridors, bedroom terraces and the Sun Terrace, along with various infrastructure upgrades.

The South African beer brewing industry is embracing more sustainable practices in it brewing processes, to cut down on the intense reliance on resources like water and power, as well as embracing circularity and farm-to-table concepts. Halima Frost tells us more.

Brewing is not only a resource-intensive but also a water-intensive operation, and only through more sustainable practices can the South African beer-brewing sector assert itself as a sustainable and environmentally responsible industry. These sustainable practices are being increasingly championed by smaller local brew houses and have been successfully exampled by Pretoria-based brewery and taproom Hazeldean Brewing Company.

The brewery, located on a working stud farm and destination venue, was designed using a closed-pipe system, which allows it to contain all the water and the chemicals it uses. Hazeldean Brewing Company founder, owner and operator Marius Botha speaks with Engineering News.

The brewery embraces sustainable practices using solar power, harnesses borehole water to improve its water security and implements sustainable farming practices by growing its own hops, lemons and Peacan nuts for some of its brews.

It has also made great headway with its herb gardens, and the next phase of its farm-to-table initiatives includes using its own compost to start growing vegetables for the Taproom restaurant.
