Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has completed construction on the Bayhead bypass road at the Durban Container Terminal, which is meant to manage the diversion of heavy motor vehicles and improve the flow of road traffic on Bayhead road.

This follows flood damage to Bayhead road in April 2022, which led to severe truck congestion en route to the terminal.

The 1.6 km bypass road comprises a uni-directional single carriageway consisting of two lanes towards the Island View Complex and the Durban Container Terminals.

It stretches from the Shell service station on Bayhead road to the turning circle on Ambrose Park access road that joins the Langberg road intersection at Transnet Academy’s Faculty of Port Terminals and Marine.

The bypass road is set to significantly reduce traffic on Bayhead road, which is integral to TNPA’s efforts to decongest the Port of Durban and maintain fluidity in the maritime logistics value chain.
