State-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has reported steady progress of the road rehabilitation project at the Port of Durban to improve access to facilities and reduce delays caused by dilapidated road infrastructure within port boundaries.

Since September 2023, the project teams have successfully completed 58% of the road works in the Maydon Wharf and Bayhead precincts.

Further, the Bayhead and South Coast road intersection, as well as Toulon, Davey, Parker, McBride, Fletcher, Wisely, Maydon and Johnstone roads have undergone major refurbishments, entailing stormwater pipe jetting, kerbs and channels cleaning and milling of existing asphalt and paving.

The repairing of roads is set to improve road safety and improve operational efficiencies with the elimination of incidents caused by slow traffic overflow in the four port precincts, namely Maydon Wharf, Container, Bayhead and Island View.

“The project team is working diligently to ensure that the project is completed on time, as we understand that delays could result in further traffic congestion to the port. We urge drivers to be vigilant and patient when using the impacted roads, as we work to ease the pressure on the roads which has led to the deterioration of our road infrastructure,” says TNPA Port of Durban acting port manager Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi.

The 24-month project is aligned with the Transnet Recovery Plan and TNPA's mandate to provide port infrastructure that ensures the port’s efficient functioning, as the gateway to the South African economy.
