Volvo Trucks launches stop-start engine technology, and it’s coming to SA
Volvo Trucks has added engine stop-start functionality to its truck line-up.
The Swedish truck maker says this is a world-first for the heavy-duty truck industry, in a move that promises to cut fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The innovation is based on Volvo Trucks’ existing I-See and I-Roll technologies, and is enabled by the constant monitoring of road data.
This means, for example, that the truck engine will be turned off temporarily when an oncoming downward slope is identified along the route.
While the engine is turned off, zero fuel will be consumed and, consequently, there will be no tailpipe emissions.
The stop-start functionality is activated at speeds above 60 km/h.
Depending on enabling conditions such as topography and ambient temperature, the stop-start technology will be able to cut up to 1% of the truck’s fuel and carbon emissions.
Volvo Trucks says the new technology will soon also be available in South Africa, but as an optional extra to fleet owners.
Locally it will be offered on the Volvo FH, paired with a 13-liter diesel engine.
A roll-out date must still be confirmed.
Volvo Trucks’ strategy for decarbonisation includes combustion engines powered by renewable fuels, battery-electric trucks, as well as fuel-cell electric trucks.
Volvo trucks are assembled in 12 countries across the globe.
Last year, roughly 134 000 Volvo trucks were delivered worldwide.
