WA govt backs Rio Tinto pilot for low-emissions iron production

The Western Australian government has welcomed Rio Tinto’s new low-emissions iron-ore processing pilot in Kwinana, describing it as a key initiative to decarbonise the state’s largest export and diversify its economy.

Premier Roger Cook said in a statement on Wednesday that the project “demonstrates how WA can decarbonise its most significant export” while supporting the government’s efforts to maintain the state as the nation’s strongest economy.

Energy, Decarbonisation and Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson highlighted the opportunity to grow Western Australia’s industrial base, create secure jobs and retain more value locally through low-emission iron production.

The pilot, a partnership between Rio Tinto and Calix, will use Calix’s Zero Emissions Steel Technology, or Zesty, to produce up to 30 000 t/y of hydrogen direct reduced iron (DRI) or hot briquetted iron. The Kwinana location provides access to established utilities, ports, and the nearby NeoSmelt facility, itself a joint venture between Rio Tinto, BHP, Mitsui, Woodside Energy and BlueScope.

If successful, the demonstration plant could pave the way for decarbonising Pilbara iron-ore, aligning with WA’s Made in WA plan objectives of economic diversification, value adding, and emissions reduction.

NeoSmelt has already received a A$75-million investment from the state government, alongside Commonwealth support through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.
