Wetility wins award for AI optimisation system for embedded solar
Solar technology company Wetility has been awarded the first-ever South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) Solar PV Research and Development Award for its AI Mode innovation, which is a real-time energy optimisation system that is embedded across its solar systems.
AI Mode provides autonomous, data-driven power management and was developed through a longstanding engineering partnership with inverter manufacturer GoodWe.
AI Mode dynamically shifts between solar and battery power in response to weather, use and loadshedding patterns, delivering up to 90% energy savings automatically, Wetility says.
“We built AI Mode so our customers do not have to choose between backup power and savings. Solving for South Africa’s unique energy realities pushed us to improve the core. The result is a smarter system, not just for Wetility, but for GoodWe’s global footprint too,” says Wetility chief product officer Ikenna Oguguo.
In 2019, when Wetility was a startup, it began to work closely with GoodWe. Over the past five years, engineers from the companies collaborated to re-design inverter firmware, data engineering and software that could withstand most operating environments, including in theft-prone and weak grid areas, he notes.
AI Mode demonstrates how climate technology innovation can unlock improved performance and customer experience at scale.
Wetility considers research, development and collaborations, such as that with GoodWe, ongoing investments for technology and impact, he adds.
“AI Mode is a clean energy innovation. We are proud to have worked with Wetility on this and looking forward to bring more savings, more power and more impact to South African homes,” says GoodWe founder and CEO Daniel Huang.
