The automotive industry remains one of the few industrial-strategy bright spots, with original equipment manufacturers continuing to invest in domestic production. Last month, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa reported that it would introduce a third shift at its Silverton assembly plant, in Pretoria, pictured above. The decision has been made to meet growing international and local demand for its Ranger pick-up, Ranger Raptor performance pick-up and Everest sports-utility vehicle. In 2017, the company announced a R3-billion investment to expand the capacity of the Silverton assembly plant from 124000 vehicles a year to 168000.
