Skills development organisation the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) has said it is equipping artisans and workers with future-ready skills, especially in AI, digital technologies and smart manufacturing, through its investments in smart skills centres.

During its AGM on October 24, CHIETA said it had trained 75 000 people over the past year, of which 74% were youth.

CHIETA's skills development and training programmes support South Africa’s national development goals and aim to make a meaningful difference in addressing youth unemployment and fostering inclusive growth, said CHIETA CEO Yershen Pillay.

Additionally, the organisation launched the Green Hydrogen Centre of Specialisation earlier this year, and has reinforced its leadership in green hydrogen through collaborations with industry and government, he noted.

“Our work in green hydrogen and digital innovation is ensuring our workforce is resilient, adaptable, and globally competitive.”

In the year to come, the training authority also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its Green Hydrogen programmes and partnerships, as well as furthering its efforts in digital reskilling and AI training.

CHIETA also committed to empowering marginalised communities through skills development programmes focused on employment and entrepreneurship.

“We are committed to fostering sustainable livelihoods, good governance and financial accountability, as demonstrated by our financial integrity and clean audit for 2024.

“Clean audits should not only reflect good governance but also translate into long-term, sustainable livelihoods for South Africans, especially the most vulnerable,” Pillay said.

The AGM brought together stakeholders from the chemical industry, government, and educational institutions to review the organisation’s achievements and chart the path forward for 2025.
