China Civil Engineering Construction Corp (CCECC) will invest more than $1.4-billion to revitalize a Mao-era railway line connecting copper mines in Zambia to Tanzania’s biggest port.

Negotiations for a planned 30-year concession are ongoing, Bruno Ching’andu, MD of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority that operates the line, said in an emailed statement Thursday.

The two African nations agreed to bring in State-owned CCECC to refurbish the line that’s run into a state of disrepair. Last year, China, Tanzania and Zambia signed a memorandum of understanding to restore the 1 860 km railway that Mao Zedong’s China financed and helped build in the 1970s. That signaled the start of its biggest upgrade yet.
