City approves Transport Master Plan for Randburg, Zandspruit

The City of Johannesburg has approved a comprehensive Transport Master Plan (TMP) for the Randburg and Zandspruit areas.

This strategic plan, developed by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the Transport Department and consultants led by Merchelles Collective, addresses transport challenges and aims to create a more efficient, compact urban form.

Key features of the masterplan include a ten-year strategic plan, with the TMP to guide both public- and private-sector investments, focusing on improving the transport system and urban environment.

The goal is to promote productive land use and economic activities in areas with existing or planned transport infrastructure.

The masterplan is also aimed at making public transport a viable alternative, ensuring residents live close to work, shopping and leisure opportunities, thereby reducing the environmental impact and the reliance on private cars.

The plan also features environmental benefits. By promoting a high-density urban area, the TMP is expected to lower the demand for private motorised transport and shorten average trip lengths. This will, in turn, save residents time and money on public transport.

The City and the JDA say they are committed to prioritising non-motorised transport, creating a well-connected public transport system that reduces the use of private cars.

The Zandspruit TMP includes infrastructure improvements, with the Transport Department’s Infrastructure team implementing interventions along South Africa drive, a key public transport route in Cosmo City. This includes improving the walking network and providing public transport laybys.

The TMP for the area also aims to drive economic development and improve the safety and security of the transport system.

Meanwhile, the Randburg CBD TMP includes a new holding facility south of the existing rank that will be funded by the Transport Department. The JDA is also undertaking upgrades at the intersection of Braam Fischer drive and Jan Smuts avenue to enhance the urban environment.

“The City of Johannesburg is dedicated to creating an attractive node that will contribute to the regeneration of the CBD, attracting businesses and fostering economic growth,” the city says.
