FIGHTING ERUPTS: The deadly conflict that erupted in Sudan this month came amid a protracted power struggle that has simmered since the toppling of Omar al-Bashir four years ago, as well as the derailing of an internationally-backed framework deal to launch a civilian transition. With the conflict affecting the capital of Khartoum there were immediate fears that fighting between the armed forces against the Rapid Support Forces could again see Sudan falling into civil war.
