Energy efficiency, services and solar photovoltaic solutions company GreenYellow has secured two contracts in South Africa, including a seven-year energy efficiency partnership agreement with retail investment holding company Retailability that will provide 16 GWh of annual energy savings, representing a 30% reduction in their energy bill of 106 Edgars sites.

Further, the company will also develop solar photovoltaic projects, totalling 2.8 MW, for two large industrial sites of cement manufacturer PPC Cement, enabling PPC to reduce its dependence on State-owned power utility Eskom.

The installations will be a mix of rooftop and ground-mounted installations, and GreenYellow has already begun engineering and design work, with construction having begun at the end of May and commissioning set for September.

The two projects, a 0.516 MW project at PPC’s Jupiter site and a 2.36 MW project at its Hercules site, will be a power purchase agreement for self- consumption, with PPC as the private offtaker.

GreenYellow will implement energy efficiency projects in 106 of Retailability’s Edgars sites, though the seven-year partnership, which will lead to a substantial reduction in their direct carbon footprint, with more than 14 000 t of carbon dioxide emissions avoided a year.

The contract will involve a complete lighting redesign and optimisation of the Edgars store portfolio, requiring zero capital investment from Retailability and which will deliver immediate energy savings.

The lighting will provide higher illuminance levels in store and improve store aesthetics. Further, the contract will provide access to GreenYellow’s Easy Vision IP, which enables real-time energy monitoring by in-house energy engineers, in-depth investigation of energy wastages, improvement and data analysing, and identification of individual causes to fix the root problem, the company said.

“These new contracts constitute a major part of our expansion into South Africa. GreenYellow is proud to support Retailability and PPC in their energy transition by providing environment-friendly energy solutions that will enable them to reduce their consumption, reliance from the grid and improve their energy performance,” said GreenYellow president Otmane Hajji.

GreenYellow has positioned itself as a key player in the market and is supporting companies in their energy transition with new energy efficiency and photovoltaic implementation projects, said GreenYellow country director Mike Ilias.

“GreenYellow continues its international expansion and is now strongly present in South Africa. After less than two years of implementation, GreenYellow has managed to sign its second largest energy efficiency contract with Retailability. These partnerships show the impact of GreenYellow in the market,” he said.
