Icasa officially appoints new chairperson
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has appointed Councillor Mothibi Ramusi as chairperson, effective May 2, for a five-year term.
The official appointment of Ramusi followed Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Mondli Gungubele’s announcement in the Government Gazette on April 3, and is in line with Section 5(1B) (c) of the Icasa Act No 13 of 2000, as amended.
Ramusi, who holds a bachelors’ degree in electronic systems engineering and various other formal qualifications, has held various senior positions in the information and communication technology (ICT) and space/satellite sectors since 1992.
“Ramusi brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, with over three decades of experience in the ICT sector. He will play a crucial role in advancing Icasa's mandate to regulate the telecommunications, broadcasting and postal sectors in the public interest, to promote competition and to ensure universal access to communication infrastructure, services and content,” said Icasa acting chairperson Councillor Peter Zimri.
Zimri emphasized the significant role the appointment will play in advancing the authority's mission of effective regulatory oversight in the sector, noting that the council pledges to support and work together with the chairperson to address the dynamic challenges and opportunities in the rapidly-evolving ICT landscape, including both broadcasting and postal services.
Ramusi was sworn in as Icasa’s sixth chairperson on Monday in a ceremony presided over by High Court of South Africa former acting Judge Honourable Professor JCW van Rooyen.
