Local world-record rower joins Solar Capital as South Africa country manager
Renewable energy company Solar Capital has appointed the Row2Rio ocean rower Zirk Botha country manager of its South African operations.
Solar Capital is a subsidiary of the Phelan Energy Group.
Botha will assist Solar Capital with expanding its market footprint, market development, people leadership and building key external relationships.
Phelan CEO Louise Phelan says the company gladly welcomes a person with proven determination, a wealth of solar industry experience and business development knowledge.
Botha previously served in the navy for 17 years and then worked at Juwi Renewables Energies for more than ten years.
Solar Capital currently has 200 MW of solar photovoltaic plants in South Africa, and is building a further 86 MW plant at Loeriesfontein. The company has an extensive pipeline that can accommodate an additional 2 000 MW of renewable energy generation capacity.
Botha says he is passionate about driving sustainability in the renewables industry to mitigate climate change.
“The opportunity to head up the Solar Capital operations in South Africa provides me with an opportunity to expand my management and leadership skills, not only promoting sustainable development, but assisting to alleviate the power shortage in South Africa.
“My record-breaking row was a cold face experience of the negative impact that non-sustainable operations have on our oceans and the same is applicable to the rest of our planet,” he states.
Botha believes the planet is at a tipping point, which makes sustainable alternative energy sources for mining and large commercial manufacturing operations an urgent objective.
Botha completed a transatlantic ocean row from South Africa to Brazil, covering 7 200 km in 71 days earlier this year, setting a new world record.
