Labour union the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has welcomed the signing of an above-inflation wage agreement with the Bombela Operating Company, which operates the Gautrain.
The agreement is for one year – from July 1 this year to June 30, 2025.
Numsa has secured a 6.8% wage increase across the board, which is above the current inflation rate of 5.1%, it points out.
The Night Work Transport Subsidy will increase from R105 to R112; the night shift allowance from R35 to R37; the housing subsidy from R1 210 to R1 300 and the key performance indicators bonus incentive will increase by 6.8%.
The signing of the agreement means the strike is over and all striking employees are expected back at work by July 26, the union says.
“Numsa wishes to thank its members for their courage and their determination. They were loyal to their demands and they showed gallant resistance against an onslaught from an inflexible employer. Their strike pushed the employer from the initial offer of 5.3% to 6.8%. This is working class power!
“Numsa also wishes to thank its officials for their hard work in negotiating this agreement. We continue to ensure that workers receive above-inflation increases to mitigate against the high cost of living,” says Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim.
