Multidisciplinary engineering company Bosch Projects has entered one of its recently completed projects for the Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa) Aon Engineering Excellence awards, which will take place in Midrand, Gauteng, next month.

Bosch Projects completed a R32-million bulk sewer infrastructure project, south of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, in February, for the eThekwini municipality’s water and sanitation division. The project has been entered for the category of projects under R50-million.

Bosch Projects project manager Manditha Jamuna tells Engineering News that the company cultivates a culture of achievement because its employees adopt ‘The Bosch Way’ and the teams are high achievers.

She explains that client relationships are central to the business and the company encourages its employees to grow and operate with integrity, trust and respect.

“We have a passion for excellence and delivering exceptional results; innovation is at the heart of Bosch Projects. Teamwork is critical to success and the company embraces transformation.”

Bosch Projects was appointed to carry out multidisciplinary design, implementation and construction management for the Malukazi Bulk Sewer Infrastructure Scheme, a subproject of the eThekwini municipality’s Provision of Water and Sanitation Services to Human Settlements project.

The project included the construction of bulk sewer gravity mains, a sewer pumpstation, a sewer rising main and 20 communal ablution facilities, with associated water and sewer reticulation.

Civil design for this project comprised the pumpstation design review, design of a temporary pumpstation, bulk and reticulation sewer infrastructure, roads and stormwater rehabilitation and the environmental management of a water course. Electrical and mechanical components included pump and pipework design, ventilation design, lighting and electrical supply, lightning protection and telemetry.

“Apart from the civil design and electrical and mechanical components, Bosch Projects was also responsible for the important coordination management of subspecialists, including mechanical, ventilation, fire, geotechnical, electrical, roads and earthing contractors.”

Jamuna highlights that the project created more than 100 jobs in the local community and currently provides a basic level of service of sanitation and water for the previously underserved community.

Moreover, the project also enhanced the lives of community members since the road was upgraded, subsequently providing the community with access to transport.

“In addition, it has improved health conditions, owing to the introduction of communal ablution facilities and the bulk sewer network and pumpstation, the project has uplifted the dignity of communities.”

Although the company faced several challenges that disrupted the continuity of work, including unlawful actions of local business forums, community unrest and political pressure in the area, the project was completed within budget and to the highest-quality standards, notes Jamuna.

“Despite the constant interruptions, Bosch Projects endeavored to support the client in its quest to ensure that the pumpstation and associated infrastructure were complete and that the community received sanitation services.

“The company has always remained impartial and this was the critical success factor in ensuring the delivery of a successful project,” she recounts.

Bosch Projects offers solutions throughout Southern Africa, in diverse sectors, including energy and industrial plants, water and wastewater, roads, land and building developments, as well as sugar and agriculture, ports and terminals.

These services include project and construction management; programme management – management of multiple, linked projects; procurement and contract services; risk management; quality assurance and projects control, including cost and schedule management.

“Sustainability is core to the way in which Bosch Projects does business and the company delivers beyond expectations,” Jamuna concludes.
