Local test and measurement company TANDM Technologies has introduced engineering company Brüel & Kjaer’s (B&K’s) wireless, smartphone-operated 2245 and 2255 sound level meters (SLMs) to the South African market, which TANDM business development manager Jozua Joubert says marks a significant advancement in local sound measurement capabilities.

TANDM is the local distributor for these devices, a significant achievement for the company, says Joubert, “considering the rarity of finding entry-level SLMs that combine extensive capabilities with user-friendly operation”.

He notes that the introduction of these meters by TANDM not only provides local industries with access to “world-class measurement devices” but also aligns with the broader goal of enhancing workplace safety and environmental compliance.

“Through the precise identification and quantification of noise sources, these tools pave the way for a safer and more regulated work environment, contributing significantly to the local manufacturing and testing sectors in South Africa,” he tells Engineering News.

Using the B&K 2245 and 2255 SLMs allows for the capture and storage of environmental noise data, facilitating regulatory compliance through thorough review and response, Joubert explains.

This advanced Class 1 measurement solution is a wireless and smartphone-operated device that can be used as a standalone SLM, or paired with dedicated mobile apps, and PC software through Bluetooth or Wi-fi interface.

As required, the Bluetooth and Wi-fi interfaces have been type approved by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

This feature enables users to wirelessly connect an IOS mobile device (Android devices not yet supported) with multiple SLMs from a distance, giving them the capability to adjust measurement settings, engage with real-time measurement data, initiate, halt, and pause measurements, add notes to measurement data, instantly calculate measured values, and even record and stream live audio directly from the SLM.

Moreover, the integration of GPS in the meter enhances the precision of data geo-referencing and ensures accurate synchronisation of time across multiple meters.

The designed apps cater to specific measurement scenarios, streamlining the measurement process. These user-friendly apps facilitate straightforward setup and execution of various types of noise measurements, making the task of measuring more accessible and efficient.

According to Joubert, Icasa’s approval underscores the legal compliance of these devices for use within South Africa’s radio signal spectrum. This approval is crucial for using the meters’ Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity features, enabling seamless remote interactions with the devices.

The open application processing interface facilitates real-time remote management, integration and accessibility of the SLM through third-party software and applications.

Consequently, users will have the freedom to venture beyond the pre-existing apps and software developed by B&K for these instruments, allowing them to tailor or develop bespoke software for highly specialised applications.

Features

The B&K 2245 has five distinct versions tailored to specific noise measurement needs such as exhaust, environmental, workplace and product noise. The B&K 2255 expands these capabilities further by including acoustics assessments, making it invaluable for building acoustics evaluations, Joubert says.

Both models come equipped with a suite of job-specific apps and an optional smart docking station that simplifies data transfer.

Their calibrator auto-detection function ensures rapid, error-free calibration, enhancing user confidence in measurement accuracy.

Noteworthy specifications include a single measurement range of 22.7 dB to 140.6 dB (A), frequency range of 6 Hz to 20 kHz, and 16 GB of internal storage, ensuring comprehensive and reliable data collection.

“B&K’s commitment to reliability and precision is reflected in its support offerings, including a local support team for troubleshooting and maintenance,” he concludes.
