The Engen Maths and Science Schools 2024 matric class in Cala achieved flying colours.

Engen celebrated the effort and sacrifice of the top learners from grades 10 -12 at Khanyisa Special School in Cala on February 1st, 2025

The EMSS programme, which provides free extra tuition in critical “gateway” subjects like Mathematics, English, and Physical Science, continues to empower learners to excel academically and access opportunities in STEM fields.

Spotlight on Top Achievers

Sandinathi Mkhize from Cala achieved five distinctions, including 88% for Mathematics, and is set to pursue her dream of studying medicine at Walter Sisulu University. The 18-year-old, who joined the EMSS Cala programme in Grade 10, credits the free Saturday classes with helping her excel in her studies. Sandinathi offers this advice to the Class of 2025: “When doing something that will change your life, do it with focus and passion. Work hard, believe in yourself even when the journey feels tough, and use every resource available to you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, consistency is key.”

Cwenga Mawileliza achieved 83% for mathematics and Iviwe Mdleleni achieved  an impressive 86% for math.

Empowering South Africa’s Future

The EMSS programme, running for over 35 years, offers free supplementary education to 1,500 learners annually at 10 centres nationwide. These centres are in the Eastern Cape (x3), Cape Town (x2), Johannesburg (x1), and KwaZulu-Natal (x4), providing learners from underserved communities with the tools to excel in STEM careers.

“Engen is immensely proud of all our matriculants, especially our top achievers who embody resilience and hard work,” says Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager. “Their success highlights how quality education can transform lives and help address South Africa’s critical skills shortage.”

Engen’s commitment to education aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. Through the EMSS programme, the company continues to bridge educational gaps and empower learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Recognising Excellence Across South Africa

Engen will host awards ceremonies throughout February to honour the top performers at its EMSS centres nationwide.

“We are proud to celebrate these learners’ achievements,” concludes Mdabula. “Their success reflects the power of education to shape a brighter future for South Africa.”
