Having the necessary technologies, parts and expertise on hand has enabled industrial equipment supplier BMG to cement its long-standing partnership with a leading platinum group metals mining client, with BMG managing all on-site lubrication, and hydraulic and filtration systems, for critical production areas on the mine, says BMG engineering GM Pieter Louwrens.

“Through the dedicated efforts of our BMG field service team, we’ve implemented a proactive maintenance programme that ensures optimal fluid cleanliness, precise lubrication scheduling and continuous monitoring of system performance.”

As a result, the site now operates with “notably low levels of unplanned downtime, achieving improved equipment reliability and extended component life,” he adds.

This partnership is a benchmark for the way in which BMG’s technical expertise and hands-on service capability can deliver consistent uptime, reduced operational risk and measurable cost savings in demanding mining environments.

The company offers a comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance programme tailored to heavy mining applications.

“Our approach combines on-site condition monitoring, vibration analysis, oil sampling and thermography to assess critical components in real time.”

The BMG Integrated Reliability Programme enables technicians to identify early signs of wear or failure, which, in turn, enables maintenance teams to plan interventions proactively.

This data-driven approach enhances equipment uptime, extends asset lifespan and reduces unplanned downtime across the mining value chain.

Further Afield

BMG’s field service division operates a national network of mobile service technicians strategically based across all major mining regions of South Africa.

“Our drives, fluid technical and belting teams are equipped to respond rapidly to maintenance requirements, with over 60 qualified technicians and site crews providing on-site hydraulic, pneumatic, power transmission, gearbox repair and belting support,” says Louwrens.

For urgent breakdowns, the company boasts a response time of between two and four hours in key mining zones, ensuring minimal disruption to production. In remote areas, turnaround times are managed through prescheduled service routes and on-call standby teams to maintain optimal service continuity.

“All BMG field service technicians undergo industry-accredited technical training, including hydraulic and pneumatic system certifications, National Qualifications Framework-level trade tests, and original equipment manufacturer- (OEM-) specific product courses on mechanical drives, gearboxes, motors and variable-speed drives.”

Technicians also complete ongoing skills development programmes, covering safety standards such as Mine Health and Safety Act compliance, contamination control and advanced diagnostics.

“This ensures alignment with mining industry best practices and compliance with site-specific safety and operational protocols,” he highlights.

Building the Team

Continuous improvement is at the core of BMG’s service philosophy. Its technicians participate in structured technical upskilling programmes through the BMG Academy of Training and Development.

These include OEM workshops, supplier-led product training and digital simulation modules focused on emerging technologies such as Internet of Things-enabled condition monitoring, automated lubrication systems and smart power transmission diagnostics. The academy offers classroom instruction and practical, hands-on training.

This ensures that the teams remain at the forefront of evolving maintenance technologies and can support customers in implementing modern reliability practices.

“BMG is committed to ongoing skills enhancement and technical upskilling for its maintenance teams through a structured and proactive training programme that aligns with the evolving techno- logical advancements and operational needs of the mining industry.”

Louwrens adds that the company remains committed to supporting South Africa’s mining sector through technical excellence, reliable service delivery and a proactive approach to equipment care.

The company also offers cross- functional training, whereby maintenance teams regularly participate in multi-disciplinary training covering mechanical, electrical and automation systems to enhance their troubleshooting skills and system integration capabilities in the field.
