Project Description
Sibanye-Stillwater is implementing a major portfolio of renewable-energy projects in South Africa. Its goal is for 600 MW of renewable capacity to be operational by late 2026, with 407 MW of solar and wind projects under construction.

Projects currently under construction include:

  • Castle Wind Farm (89 MW), Northern Cape – African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) consortium;
  • Witberg Wind Farm (103 MW), Western Cape – Red Rocket South Africa;
  • SOLA Group solar project (75 MW of 150 MW), Free State – SOLA Group; and
  • Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm (140MW), Western Cape – AIIM consortium.

The project portfolio is expected to supplement an estimated 30% of Sibanye-Stillwater’s total electrical energy requirements and yield material cost savings.

Capital Expenditure
The total portfolio will cost between R12-billion and R14-billion, being fully funded by third-parties through varying-tenor power purchase agreements entered into between Sibanye-Stillwater and the project companies.

Castle Wind Farm will cost R2.4-billion to implement, Witberg Wind Farm is estimated at R2.4-billion, SOLA Group solar project is estimated at R2.8-billion and Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm is estimated at R4.9-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Castle Wind Farm started construction in May 2023 and achieved commercial operation in the first quarter of 2025.

Witberg Wind Farm started construction in December 2023 and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.

SOLA Group solar project started construction in December 2023 and is targeted for completion in the second half of 2025.

Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm started construction in May 2024 and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.
