Besides periods of embarrassing congestion, the lack of equipment, skills and systems also lies at the heart of the country’s high logistics costs and weak growth. There are some signs of a recovery, however, even ahead of any major private investment. In May 2025, Transnet Port Terminals exceeded its targets for the arrival, berthing and departure of vessels across three of its five container terminals.
